I chose to take Never Stay Silent as a journalist needs to know the history behind our freedoms and the true impact of what we can do when we speak out.
Being afraid to speak out is the thing that truly takes our freedom, even if there are consequences for doing so. Being afraid to speak kills our professions and power, more so than any rule, so taking a class that reaffirms and concretes those ideas is a great way to ensure I never fold.
I want to be a copy editor, and I want to make sure I never silence my writers. I will encourage them to write freely and not remove any facts they've added, even if people won't like reading it.
Being honest and open regardless of consequences is crucial. The news is how people access information about everything happening in the world around them. It's our job as journalists to ensure that everything that gets published is accurate, fact-checked and reliable.
